Amazon Interactive Video Service is a managed live streaming solution with two distinct modes:

Why Look for an AWS IVS Alternative?

Four reasons come up again and again.

IVS is live-only, the platform around the library is your problem. AWS states it plainly: Amazon IVS creates live streams. Auto-record to S3 is genuinely capable; it writes HLS renditions (all of them by default, or a filtered subset to control storage cost), thumbnails at intervals down to one second, and metadata, and those recordings play back on demand through the IVS Player SDK. What it doesn’t give you is the platform: no content library or CMS, no way to upload video that didn’t come from a live stream, no subtitles or chapters, no engagement analytics, no DRM on the recorded asset.

Low-latency billing has two meters: video input per hour by channel type – $2.00 Standard, $0.85 Advanced HD, $0.50 Advanced SD or Standard with Multitrack Video, $0.20 Basic, plus video output per delivered viewer-hour, priced by resolution and by the region the viewer is served from. AWS’s own worked example puts a two-hour event with 200 viewers watching half of it at $18.40. Scale that shape: a one-hour Full HD class streamed from a Standard channel to 1,000 viewers in India is 1,000 viewer-hours at $0.1840, or $186 including input for a single session. HD output is half that rate.

Real-Time is capped, and billed per participant: Real-Time Streaming charges every connected host and viewer as a participant-hour: $0.0720 in North America and $0.0920 in India for the first 10,000 hours, dropping in tiers above that. AWS’s example of ten two-hour events with two hosts and 100 viewers comes to $146.88. The mode also caps at 25,000 viewers and 720p input, so the interactive path and the scale path are different products with different economics.

DRM lives in a different AWS service. IVS protects access with private channels and signed JWTs, and lets you revoke a viewer session, genuinely useful controls. But studio DRM is not part of IVS. On AWS, DRM comes through Elemental MediaPackage or MediaConvert using the SPEKE API with a third-party DRM provider you contract separately. That is a real, well-documented path, and for a large media operation it may be the right one.
