Best Brightcove Alternative

Quick answer: Brightcove has comprehensive DRM — Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady, including offline playback. The case for a Brightcove alternative isn’t that the technology is weaker. It’s that you cannot switch DRM on yourself. Brightcove’s own documentation states that enabling DRM requires contacting your account manager, and Brightcove does not publish list prices. TPStreams publishes its plans from $150/month with DRM available on signup.

What Is Brightcove?

Brightcove is an enterprise video platform. Its own support documentation covers Video Cloud and Studio, Brightcove Player, Live, and Beacon for OTT.

Its DRM implementation is thorough, and all of the following is verified from Brightcove’s own documentation:

  • Full multi-DRM — Widevine Modular for MPEG-DASH, Apple FairPlay for HLS, and Microsoft PlayReady, with the player selecting the right system per browser
  • Brightcove operates its own Widevine licensing server by default
  • Offline playback with DRM is supported through the Native Player SDKs
  • Live DRM is available, configured per event under Advanced Options
  • Token authentication with configurable expiry, minimum 900 seconds

That is a stronger DRM feature set than most platforms in this comparison, and broader than TPStreams in two respects: PlayReady support and DRM-protected offline playback. If you need either, Brightcove is the better technical fit and this article won’t pretend otherwise.

Why Look for a Brightcove Alternative?

Three reasons, all documented by Brightcove or by the absence of published pricing.

DRM cannot be switched on without a conversation

This is the structural point. Brightcove’s documentation describes DRM as something arranged through your account team rather than configured by you:

  • To create DRM-enabled content, “contact your account manager to have your account(s) DRM-enabled,” then configure licensing keys and ingest profiles
  • On bundling DRM protection, Brightcove directs you to “contact your Customer Success Manager”
  • For live, “your Live account must be enabled first by Brightcove Support in order to use DRM”
  • Changing the default DRM behaviour for DASH requires an account-level override applied by Support
  • Publishing a DRM-enabled live event requires a DRM-enabled player at version 6.37.1 or greater

None of that is unusual for enterprise software. But as documented, protecting your first video requires account-team involvement rather than a settings change, and altering default DRM behaviour goes back through the same channel.

Pricing is quote-only

Brightcove does not publish list prices. Its pricing pages direct buyers to contact the company rather than showing figures.

Estimates circulate on procurement and review sites, but none can be verified against Brightcove, and they disagree with each other by a very wide margin. We are not publishing any of them. What can be stated factually: you cannot determine your Brightcove cost without contacting Brightcove, and you therefore cannot compare it against a published alternative without doing so first.

Ownership changed in 2024

Bending Spoons announced a $233 million all-cash take-private acquisition of Brightcove in November 2024. Bending Spoons also acquired Vimeo for $1.38 billion in November 2025, so Brightcove and Vimeo share an owner.

Brightcove continues to operate and publish documentation. But if Brightcove and Vimeo are both on your shortlist, they are one owner rather than two independent options — worth raising during procurement.

Why TPStreams Is the Better Brightcove Alternative for Most Businesses

Published pricing you can budget against

PlanPrice/moDRM licencesDeliveryStorageLive hrs
Start$15055,000750 GB150 GB24
Pro$450110,0006 TB700 GB130
Growth$1,350300,00026 TB2 TB430
Scale$4,0501,000,00090 TB10 TB2,000

No quote, no annual commitment required to see the number, no negotiation to find out whether you can afford it. Growth and Scale include a named customer success architect and a contractual SLA.

DRM active from day one

  • Widevine and FairPlay on every plan, as a direct Google Widevine partner
  • Per-session forensic watermarking — user ID, email and IP burned into playback, so a leaked recording identifies its source
  • Token-based playback using short-lived tokens issued from your own backend
  • Domain restriction and role-based access control
  • ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II
  • DRM licensing also sold standalone if you already run your own delivery

No account manager required to enable it, no support ticket to change it.

Live and library on one plan

TPStreams ingests RTMP from OBS, vMix, Wirecast or hardware encoders, delivers adaptive HLS over a global CDN, and includes DVR inside the live session so a late-joining student can pause and rewind. Live hours are bundled — 24 on Start to 2,000 on Scale.

Auto-recording puts the finished class straight into the library, already transcoded and DRM-protected. A class streamed on Monday morning is a protected, subtitled, analytics-tracked library asset by Monday evening.

Proven in regulated training

NISM — SEBI’s securities-market certification body — runs mandated certification training on TPStreams. A joint venture of AAI and DGCA delivers regulated aviation training on it. Art of Living has streamed live to audiences across 180 countries. TPStreams reports 50,000 concurrent viewers on a single stream, 4 PB delivered monthly and 99.999% uptime over the last twelve months.
