Best Bunny Stream Alternative

Quick answer: Bunny Stream publishes low per-GB rates and free standard encoding, and for content you don’t need to protect, it is hard to argue against. The case for a Bunny Stream alternative is narrow: Bunny’s Enterprise DRM costs $99/month per video library, charged whether or not a single license is issued, plus per-licence fees on top. TPStreams bundles DRM licences into the plan. If you sell protected content, that’s the comparison.

What Is Bunny Stream?

Bunny Stream is bunny.net’s video product. Its pricing documentation is detailed and public, and everything below comes from it.

Bunny Stream bills across five dimensions: encoding, transcribing, DRM licences, storage and CDN delivery. Accounts are subject to a $1 minimum monthly usage.

  • Standard encoding is free. Enabling additional resolutions adds to your storage bill rather than an encoding charge. Only Premium Encoding is billed, per minute of output and per output codec — $0.05/min for 1080p and 720p, $0.15/min for 4K and 1440p, $0.025/min for 480p and below.
  • Storage is $0.01/GB in the default region, Europe – Frankfurt.
  • Delivery comes in two tiers. Standard is priced by region: $0.010/GB in Europe and North America, $0.030 in Asia and Oceania, $0.045 in South America, $0.060 in Middle East and Africa. Volume is a single worldwide rate that falls with usage — $0.005/GB up to 500 TB, $0.004 to 1,000 TB, $0.002 to 2,000 TB.
  • Transcription is $0.10 per language, per minute of video. Five languages costs five times as much.

On the volume tier, delivery falls to $0.002/GB above 1,000 TB. If you host unprotected video and bandwidth cost dominates your bill, Bunny is likely your answer and this article won’t argue otherwise.

Looking for a more predictable way to stream protected video?

Why Look for a Bunny Stream Alternative?

Three reasons, all documented by Bunny, all specific to protected content.

The DRM base fee is per library, and it runs whether you use it or not

Bunny’s MediaCage Enterprise DRM carries a $99 monthly base fee per video library. Bunny’s documentation states it applies for as long as Enterprise DRM is enabled on that library, whether or not any licences are issued that month.

Two consequences worth planning for:

  • If you segment content into multiple libraries, that’s $99 per library, every month.
  • You cannot switch it off yourself. Bunny’s docs state that disabling Enterprise DRM requires contacting customer support.

Licence fees stack on top, tiered by monthly volume: $0.005 each up to 20,000, $0.004 from 20,001 to 100,000, $0.003 from 100,001 to 500,000, and custom pricing above that.

One viewer can be billed as two licences

This is the detail almost nobody accounts for. Bunny’s documentation explains that multi-key DRM licensing is per playback device, and that a single device may receive two separate licences — one for the video stream and another for the accompanying stereo audio track — resulting in two DRM licences issued and billed.

So a platform serving 55,000 protected playback sessions may be billed for up to 110,000 licences. Factor that multiplier in before comparing against any per-licence price.

Storage bills the whole ladder, not your upload

Bunny is upfront about this: storage is billed on what a video generates during encoding, not the size of the file you uploaded. Every enabled resolution is stored separately, and MP4 fallback, kept original files, preview animations, thumbnails and captions all add more. Bunny’s own wording is that a library “can easily hold several times the footage you sent it.”

One related constraint: geo-replication regions cannot be removed once enabled. A library replicated to one additional region is billed $0.02/GB rather than $0.01, permanently.

What each vendor publishes. The two price DRM on different bases, so a single comparable total cannot be stated without knowing your own volumes:

Why TPStreams Is the Better Bunny Stream Alternative for Paid Content

DRM with no base fee and no per-licence meter

Scale$4,0501,000,00090 TB10 TB2,000

No per-library fee, no charge in months when nobody watches, no support ticket required to turn it off. Growth and Scale include a named customer success architect and a contractual SLA.

Protection depth from the entry plan

  • Widevine and FairPlay on every plan, as a direct Google Widevine partner
  • Per-session forensic watermarking — user ID, email and IP burned into playback, so a leaked recording identifies its source
  • Token-based playback using short-lived tokens issued from your own backend
  • Domain restriction and role-based access control
  • ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II
  • DRM licensing also sold standalone if you already run your own delivery

Live streaming included in the plan

TPStreams ingests RTMP from OBS, vMix, Wirecast or hardware encoders, delivers adaptive HLS over a global CDN, and includes DVR inside the live session so a late-joining student can pause and rewind. Live hours are bundled — 24 on Start to 2,000 on Scale, where an hour of HD counts as one and Full HD as two.

Auto-recording puts the finished class straight into the library, already transcoded and protected. A class streamed on Monday morning is a protected, subtitled, analytics-tracked library asset by Monday evening.

Proven where content is the revenue

NISM — SEBI’s securities-market certification body — runs mandated certification training on TPStreams. A joint venture of AAI and DGCA delivers regulated aviation training on it. Art of Living has streamed live to audiences across 180 countries. TPStreams reports 50,000 concurrent viewers on a single stream, 4 PB delivered monthly and 99.999% uptime over the last twelve months.
